The Moon, Ch. 2

**A/N: Thank you for your support – it’s been overwhelming and totally awesome!  😀 Now, on with the story!**

.

Willa waited for a few minutes to see if any of Sookie’s guests would go check on her, but when none of those so-called friends even noticed that she was gone, she shook her head.  They sure didn’t mind stuffing her food down their faces, though.  She rose and went to check on Sookie herself.  Couldn’t they tell she was upset?

The selfishness of most people, be they human, Were, shifter, or vampire, never ceased to amaze her. Early in her life she’d realized that while her family loved her, that love came with conditions. She hated having to act as if she bought into the family bigotry, but so long as she did, things were more or less fine. As time went on, she was often the means to an end, too. While her family was never so crass as to prostitute her body, they did often ‘prostitute’ her smile and congenial nature during fund-raisers and other political events to lure in the support they wanted from older well-established male constituents. There toward the end, though, she couldn’t even act the part any more.

At first Eric had been a godsend. He was tall, gorgeous, and courageous, his presence carried for miles…and he was a vampire. But before too long, even his ‘love’ had proven conditional. When he had no further use for her, he had abandoned her as if she had never existed.

Maybe that was why she cared about Sookie. In a way, they’d both felt dumped by Eric.  Sookie might be right in thinking that had never been his intention, that he hadn’t meant to make his own child feel abandoned, but he had.

Several years ago, not too long after Bill had finally died his protracted death, she’d run into the telepath at the new gas station in Bon Temps. They had both arrived at the New Blood display at the same time, and had struck up a conversation. She figured that Sookie must have felt sorry for her when she invited her over to the farmhouse for a small get together with Jessica and Hoyt that evening – no doubt she’d looked as pitiful as she’d felt that night.

Not having anything better to do, Willa had followed the blonde back to her house. She was curious about the woman Eric had been so crazy over, and Pam had been so jealous of, and it wasn’t as if she had anything better to do. Looking back over everything that had passed since then, she realized that was one of the best decisions of her life, dead or not.

Sookie never asked her for anything except honesty, never pressured her to do anything on her behalf, and in fact was an excellent listener. When she gave advice, it was with Willa’s best interest at heart.

At some point Willa had started feeling a bit bad about how she’d treated Eric. She was still very pissed at him for abandoning her so soon after he’d Turned her but eventually curiosity had her asking Sookie about him. The blonde had cried with her the night that she had told her about Eric releasing her. Willa was still furious with the tall blond Viking for only Turning her to piss off her father, no matter what he had said when he officially let her go, and she was grateful to Sookie for understanding that even while encouraging her to at least have some sort of contact with him if that was what she wanted.

Even though he had released her, she still felt a strange pull to him, but figured it must be some sort of an ingrained-in-the-blood pull toward her Maker, some weird part of that Maker/child thing he never bothered explaining to her.

With Sookie’s support, she had finally taken the step one night to call the Big Bossy Blond himself, and was gratified by how he had immediately asked if she needed anything, clearly going with the assumption that his “ex-child” was in trouble and needed help that he was obviously quite willing to give. He had seemed very pleased to discover that she was only calling to…talk. They had spoken on the phone a couple of times now, and while the conversations still weren’t anywhere near casual, they were oddly…comforting. She just excused it as a remnant of that Maker/child thing.

Less than three steps away from the table, she could clearly hear Sookie’s quiet sobs.

This wasn’t good.

She vamped to the closed bathroom door and knocked softly.

“Sookie? Sookie, are you ok?”

Fuck, she cursed to herself, of course she’s not ok.

“Sookie, can you let me in? It’s Willa.” She leaned her head against the old door and waited. Finally she heard Sookie blow her nose and give a muffled reply. Eventually she heard the toilet flush, too, and smiled a little. She felt bad for the heavily pregnant woman who could never be more than 50 feet away from a bathroom now.

When Sookie opened the door, Willa carefully wrapped her arms around the still obviously distraught woman and hugged her.

“What’s wrong? And don’t give me that ‘I’m just being a preggo’ nonsense.”

Sookie laughed once, then started crying again. She gasped when Willa effortlessly hauled her up in her arms and walked carefully toward her bedroom.

“First of all let’s get you off those swollen feet, then we’re going to talk. You’ve helped me, now it’s my turn to help you.”

Sookie felt strange being carried by someone smaller, and much lighter, than herself, but was glad to be off her feet. All the cooking and baking she’d had to do the last two days had a lot harder on her than she’d told anyone.

Once ensconced on her bed, in between hiccuping sobs and mopping her face, she told Willa about how things really were with Steve. When she first met him, she wasn’t sure what he was, but she couldn’t hear his thoughts very often at all. Mostly what she heard from him could best be described as an echo of nothing, and that intrigued her. Back then, everything was fine.

She was pretty much over the horror that had been Bill since well before his Lilith days, and since Eric hadn’t even once tried to contact her once he knew she was free, she figured why not go out with a new guy?

He was tall and muscular, he said all the right words, and it was all sex, all the time. Who could ask for anything more, right?

When they found out she was pregnant, he had surprised her one evening with a small but respectable engagement ring, but the whole occasion had an obligatory feel to it that ruined any joy she might have felt. But, Steve Campbell was determined to be an honorable man, so she went with it.

The real problems began when the pregnancy started to show. His consulting business required him to travel some, and before the pregnancy, when he returned home from one of his trips a sex-fest was almost guaranteed. That was the real reason she had quit waitressing – Steve had demanded that she be available for him when he came home from his travels so they could ‘have their time together’, and her schedule just wasn’t flexible enough to allow for that. At first she didn’t mind; there were more than enough odd jobs needing to be done around the old farmhouse to keep her busy, and he made more than enough money so that they could afford it. But after a while she resented not having her own money and the feeling of independence a job gave her.  Now she couldn’t take a job if it was offered on a silver platter.

As soon as her body began to swell, however, things changed. His trips became more frequent and lasted longer, and when he would return, more often than not he would be in a foul mood or there would be some other excuse to not have sex with her. Citing her “big fat baby gut,” several months ago he had finally moved into one of the other bedrooms. By that time Sookie was glad. She put on a front to her friends but was absolutely miserable inside.

“It’s funny how he gave such great foot and back rubs until I started needing them,” she ended with a sniff.

“He sounds like a complete asshole,” Willa agreed, her anger at the bad smelling man rising exponentially. She would bet money that he was whoring around on Sookie. “Have you thought about leaving him?” That seemed to be the only real course of action she could see for her friend.

“Yes,” Sookie replied instantly, “all the fucking time, really. I’d love to just throw him out of here tonight! But I don’t have any way of supporting myself. Hell, I don’t even have a damn job!”

This time her tears were caused by anger and self-disgust rather than heartbreak.

Willa thought about the money that Eric had settled on her after he’d returned, and smiled a bit evilly. Fuck Steven fucking Campbell.  She could have that smelly bastard out the door in a human’s heartbeat.

“Sookie,” she asked, her voice weighted with feeling.  “Do you really want to get rid of that asshole tonight? I mean, is that what you really want to do?”

Her friend stared back at her, worried but now slightly confused brown eyes meeting her own calm, thoughtful expression.

Sookie then closed her eyes and gave serious consideration to Willa’s question. After a few minutes, she nodded firmly.

Enough was enough.

~•0•~

Even as the moon abandoned him to slowly make way for the sun, still Eric reclined on his cheap lawn chair, his eyes slowly becoming accustomed once again to the light of false dawn. He checked his watch which revealed what his blood already knew – he had managed to stay out almost 30 seconds longer this morning.

Eventually, however, self-preservation forced him up, and with heavy steps and drooping shoulders he headed toward the secret room in the basement of Fangtasia. Granted it was fire-proof with its own sprinkler and ventilation systems, and was decked out in the finest that Pam could buy, but it was still just a room…just a place to die yet again for yet another day.

  2. I love that Willa is willing to help Sookie with money that Eric has given her and that it seems Sookie finally has a true friend. And poor Eric. He is in need of a real home and for Sookie to be in it. I love this story and can’t wait for more!!! ❤

  3. gyllene: Awwww. thank you!! I felt sure I was going to get some major backlash over Sookie feeling that Eric abandoned her… I can see where she’s coming from in that she misses him and he’s not there, and he hasn’t contacted her even once since he’s been gone, but she needs to remember that SHE was the one who just KEPT choosing Beehl over him… Glad you liked it!

  4. Sookie needs to remember that she kept rejecting Eric. No wonder he stayed away. Hopefully she’ll pull her head out of her ass and kick this Steve asshole out and, with Willa’s help, go get the man/vampire who loves her back!

  5. I wonder what Steve Campbell is that Sookie cannot hear him. Willa just might need Eric’s help getting rid of him. That give Eric something better to do than sitting in a lawn hair on the roof.

  6. Well I’ve never met a Steve/Steven I liked, oh and look there’s another one… Are you sure he’s not a really stupid human with no thoughts in that resonating chamber of a mind of his? I mean have you met an intelligent consultant? I fear I am going to have to start hedging bets with myself again to his possible ‘nature’. For the moment I’m going to go with assholasaurus and let’s hope the female of the species bites their mate’s head off when the offspring is born 😀

  7. I’m glad to see Willa and Sookie are becoming close cuz Sookie needs a true friend right now! So Steve isn’t the dream husband she thought he would be? Why is Sookie thinking that Eric abandoned her? Sookie was the one who always rejected him and was so Bill obsessed! Eric needs to be loved..poor baby..can’t wait for more…Take care

  8. I’m so glad Sookie is putting aside her hang-ups about money and letting Willa help her ditch the sperm donor (that’s how I like to think of him.) I always liked Willa and thought she didn’t get nearly enough of a storyline, so I love her being a part of your tale. 🙂

  9. Excellent chapter! Pretty sad times all around although I love the Willa-Sookie friendship (recalls the Pam-Sookie book relationship which never made it to TB in what was a sad loss for both characters IMO).
I think Willa has a legitimate grievance against Eric for being a pretty lousy Maker. Making Willa was very out of character in my opinion since Eric clearly didn’t go around making children willy nilly nor as part of his political ploys otherwise there would have been hundreds of the Northman line after a thousand years… But anyhow, TB fuckery made Eric into Willa’s Maker and he really let her down. Kudos to Willa for rekindling that relationship and glad that they’re a tiny bit closer though not sure Eric’s getting a lot out of it since he’s skulking around the roof of Fangtasia… yep, his game of chicken with the sun sounds a little too suicidal for my taste…
Now TB Sookie has little right to be resentful of Eric keeping his distance, IMO, since it was her who repeatedly send him away and chose other men be it Ben/Warlow, Alcide or ugh-Bill and more recently this Steve dude… who sounds like a total asshole… If Sookie cannot hear him, shouldn’t she have investigated why that may be (I am certainly very curious and suspicious about him)? With her track record, she should have checked him out esp. before getting pregnant…
Can’t wait to see Steve ejected with Willa’s help and perhaps Sookie can start making less poor decisions?

  10. Kick his mangy ass to the curb, Sookie, or something even better! This is terrific, meridian! I love how you’ve included Willla and made her a good part of Sookie’s life. She was an oft-ignored character so there’s so much room for rich development. Eric playing tag with the sun is a bit ominous, though it sounds as if he’s trying to race it, not meet it. A by-product of the cure straight from the source, perhaps? Terrific chapter, and I’m looking forward to more. 🙂

  11. I love the relationship between Sookie and Willa. I always thought they could be great friends given the chance. I think they both need the other. They come across as real, close friends. Kudos for that.

Her other friends are a selfish bunch. Eight months pregnant and they leave her to do all the work, and not even check up on her and make sure she’s okay.

I can understand Sookie’s feelings when it comes to Eric. Yes, she did push him away, but he isn’t totally blameless. He did disappear for six months years prior, then come back infected, then go off on his revenge search, and then returned to tell her he was healed, and then left again, and then returned, and left again. It’s no surprise she thought he would come back and see how she was.

My heart does break for them both though. They’re miserable apart. It seems at the moment the only person who is friends to both of them, and wants them to be happy is Willa.

    Can’t wait to read more.

And I’m really glad to hear that they’ve come across as close friends even though this story is still so short. Fast-friendships can be made in real life, so why not in fics? I’m so glad it didn’t sound rushed. 😀 Thanks for a great review!! 😀

  29. No matter how smart a woman is(or a man), a woman(man) can always get trapped by a manipulator. Eric is in a depression only Sookie can help with and him killing her baby daddy, but Sookie’s depression will be helped when that douche gets kicked out. Eric coming back will help her completely and possibly killing baby daddy.

I also have a hard time with the idea that the other women wouldn’t insist on helping Sookie and trying to get her to rest. Everyone else was sitting on their asses chit-chatting away with each other (and a little with her, too) while she was the only one up on her feet with a pitcher refilling glasses.

  36. Back again and still happy. And Yes On with the story! Willa she seems to be a good soul. They see Sookie as the waitress and cook not the friend. Willa, dear be it your smile, congenial nature or body it is still being prostituted. I am sure Eric was a godsend to you and it hurt your heart when he too turned conditional but remember he was in a very very low place even if you never saw it. Cause I know he would have hidden that from you. *but Ms Karen will get him to divulge all his little secrets, if not I will just call on Godric* I just hope that you can be the progeny that he deserves. Us southerners and talking, give us 5 minutes and you could be a new best friend we met at the supermarket! You gotta love us. You go Willa be the smart one! Great decision! Just remember Willa some of our mistakes *not saying you were a mistake* lead to us learning the greatest lessons and sometimes when you least expect it something beautiful can come of them. Yes, Willa he has been trained by Pam, contact when she needed something. Eric is probably lonely and tired Willa go cheer him up. LMAO I can just see little Willa carrying a nine month pregnant Sookie up the stairs. Thank you Sookie for being smarter even though this Steve character has to go now! Well you wanted a Normal life Sookie so have a normal flat dull boring life. *Grrrr just a little bitter over that statement* Consulting business required travel uh huh. And she quit her job after telling Eric for years to back off…oh no what is this guy cause demanding, foul moods caveman behavior is not acceptable. “big fat baby gut” *digging thru THE BOX now where was that castrating equipment I got* Yes, Willa he is an Asshole and as I said earlier…needs to get gone now! Yes, Sookie cause this Steve-person *I question the person part* has done what Bill and your “so called” friends wanted to do all along isolate you and make you dependent on him and his wishes and you let him. *digs back into THE BOX and pulls out a medical bag and searching around to find the medicine. Godric where did I put the Intelligence shots we got last time….nevermind I found them. Okay come on you get one chapter to smarten up then I use this!!!!* OKay a little pregnancy rage that could be fun if directed at the right people. *snicker* enough is enough! Yes noooooooo no space jump again. You said no angst. I have angst I wanna know what happened. You better be glad you give me Eric. But I am feeling like he as depressed *not that he would ever admit it* as Godric was. Is Godric going to be in this at all. *sniffs I miss Godric* “but it was still just a room..just a place to die yet again for yet another day.” WTH is it with you and nailing the lines for this story! She better get smarter or I am using the injector. No, Godric!! Bring my bag back now! *chasing after Godric as he vamps out of room with the medical bag*

    Off to the next chapter!

    Enjoy~

  38. Fantastic end-line for the chapter – really captures Eric’s mood quite brilliantly. So melancholy. So glad Willa is helping Sookie. I absolutely hated the way TB had Eric turn Willa – what a fucking waste. I really thought they were out to trash his character in every way possible by the end. As for Sookie’s asshole baby-daddy – so fucking low to dump your pregnant partner. It happens – I know – but it’s a dog act (sorry dogs!) and I hope Eric kicks his ass at some point.

  39. ladytarara: Ugh, TB really tried hard to fuck Eric’s character over as hard as they could. “Our” Eric would never have changed anyone during that time-frame, and especially not to spite some Republicunt he could kill in 2 seconds flat. *head desk* Eh, in MY stories he does his best by her as time goes on, so at least there’s that. *returns to mentally kicking everyone over TB’s plotlines*

  40. *joins in mental kick-fest* Absolutely! Lamest, shittiest plot line ever… Actually maybe not. There’s a lot of competition for that prize. But yes, no way would he have turned Willa like that. Look at his relationship with Pam – it just makes no damn sense that he would turn someone just to make a fucking point when he could have ripped his head off and shoved it up his ass instead. There is NO way Eric would ever do that! *stops kicking* Now my foot hurts!

  42. *foot massager thing whirrs and hums as feet relax into bliss* I get so annoyed with shows / writers who have perfectly awesome characters and treat them like shit / destroy them for no real reason. And irritating, unlikeable female leads paired with awesome men who must have the tolerance and patience of a saint to put up with their shit – there’s always been a lot of them in literature, often with female authors, but there seems to be a particular rash of them at the moment. Sookie is just one of many.
But Eric and Pam – why would anyone mess with them?

  43. ladytarara: Ugh, that is one of the reasons I try my best to no longer get overly involved in tv shows anymore. Every time I do, the show is either cancelled for no good reason or characters are shafted without lube. It gets old, dammit.

BookPam was awesome, and I have no fucking idea why the fuckwads at HBO/TB decided to royally skrew her character over. I just don’t. But then again, they did let Lala live, and they did give us Godric – but then they fucked HIS character over too! I swear they were on shitty drugs! *glares at universe*

  44. Exactly my point! Shafted without lube indeed – and literally in Outlander if you have seen the show or read the novels. I have an absolutely wicked idea for a crossover with that show… But yes, why abuse the characters you create? Makes no fucking sense to me. I wanted Jamie to pull the nail out of his hand and stab the fucker in the eye rather than get shafted by him. *hopes furiously you have some idea about this show and I’m not just ranting into the wind*

  45. ladytarara: Lol, I will never buy, read, or watch anything associated with that title as I deem that “writer” far too obsessed with beating, raping, and torturing the characters she supposedly likes. She can get off on abusing her characters all she wants but I’m not required to participate.

  46. Yeah I don’t know what the deal is with her. I have noticed it myself… So unnecessary and sure yes it would have happened no doubt at times as the English colonised the Scots but really there is too much of it in her books. I completely agree. Such a shame cos I like the concept of her story but the content can in parts only be described as sadistic.

    Like

  47. ladytarara: She wanted to rape, torture, and abuse characters or she would not have raped, abused, or tortured characters. It’s an “if/then” situation – if she hadn’t wanted to sadistically abuse her characters, then she would not have sadistically abused her characters. At the end of the day, it truly is that simple. “Writers” can go on all they want about “the muse leading the story in this/that direction” but…they are the ones controlling their typing fingers. They don’t have to write that shit and they certainly don’t have to publish that shit. She just needs to own up to the fact that she likes raping, abusing, and torturing her characters and leave the bullshit excuses in the toilet.

  48. So true – I agree with the whole whimsical blame-the-muse rant. Just so unnecessary and such a damn waste. I think my idea of Jamie pulling the nail out of his hand and using it to stab Randall in the fucking eye was a far more creative solution. Or perhaps his cock. That would work too. I can’t go there when it comes to my own characters. Dodgy bad-idea sex yes, but not the kind of brutality particularly in the show – it’s in the book too but I found it so hideously disturbing I wanted to turn it off. I honestly can’t believe they didn’t dump the whole scene.
