The Moon, Ch. 1

Should you wish to listen as you read:

Head bowed with his forehead resting on the wood, Eric paused before opening the door to leave his office. Another night wasted sitting on that damn throne staring out at that same damn crowd of vermin..  Another night…alone.

Tired.  He was so damn tired.

As the minutes ticked by he knew that even now, almost 4 and a half years…later, his wealth was increasing exponentially with the new blood, but he couldn’t care less.

It just didn’t matter anymore.

Nothing did.

Impulsively deciding to turn left instead of right, he quickly exited the bar reeking of desperation and despair, much of it his own, and once outside he flew up to the top of Fangtasia. No one, not even Pam, knew of the ‘oasis of solitude’ he had created up there out of a lawn chair and nothing else.

He’d thought the irony of glamouring and releasing the Newlin woman on Thanksgiving night would have made him feel…something, but other than having a vague sense that Godric would have approved, there was…nothing.

Pam was livid, of course, but that was her problem.  She’d kept trying to talk him in to letting her truly pimp out Sarah, but he felt that letting vampires feed on her for the cure to the disease she’d helped create was punishment enough.  She’d served her sentence and it was time for her and her annoying voice to go.

Reclining in the chair aligned for the best view of the risen moon, he sighed as he focused on the glowing light. As he lost himself in the memories from several years back, he crossed his arms and let the pale, lonely orb above him blur into a softer, sweeter pain.

On this night he was thankful for the moon. It wasn’t his chosen company, but as it was, it was the only company he could choose.

•~•0•~•

Several miles and a few light-years away, Sookie made the rounds with her pitcher, making sure that everyone had what they wanted to drink. Even almost nine months’ pregnant she still found herself playing the waitress, serving others no matter that her back and feet ached and she already had to pee again.

Keeping her fake smile up for the sake of all her guests, she finally made it to her seat and gratefully plopped down. She aimed that same fake smile at Steve sitting at the head of the table as if he had done anything to deserve the honor. He was ok, she guessed. Even less considerate than Alcide and Bill, still, he tried…just, not very hard. She rubbed her stomach as she felt the baby kick, and realized that she wasn’t actually thankful for all that much.  The baby was healthy and strong, but that was about it.

A twinkling in the sky drew her attention and her eyes immediately caught sight of the moon. While she had always loved the sun’s warmth and light and always would, lately she’d been more and more drawn to the moon and all it represented. Somehow here lately the moon felt more comforting, more understanding.

She sighed. She had no idea how much longer she could continue on with the way things were. As she listened to the conversations going on around her, she realized that none of them were really directed toward her.

Sure, all these people had come over to her place to celebrate Thanksgiving in the company of friends, but really all they did was come to eat her food, drink her New Blood, and talk to each other.

Surrounded as she was by family and friends, she’d never felt so alone.

Giving up on picking at the food on her plate, she once again returned her gaze to the moon looking gently down upon her, and felt the tears prickling at her eyes.

Again.

Sookie quickly excused herself from the table and hauled her gravid body back into the house. Knowing that everyone automatically expected her to be going to the bathroom, she went on in and locked the door behind herself. The second the lock snicked, the tears she’d been holding back for the past several years came pouring out.

  1. *sniff* I have to say this feels more like a ‘fixer upper’ at this point than a fixer but I’m sure that no matter how hard TIIC tried while downing their daily prescribed dose of Billy bags you and the moon won’t keep these two apart 🙂 Can’t wait to see where this goes…

  2. More! More! This was lovely. I loved how you presented both their lives as being anything but how they let others perceive it and how they still missed each other even after a this time. You rock, as always!

    Like

  3. Gabriela: Thank you! If their lives had been chugging along perfectly, then there’d be no reason for them to get back together, right? 😉 Both are strong enough to not wear their hearts on their sleeves (at least, not on purpose), but yeah, they’ve both realized that what they thought they wanted wasn’t as good as they’d thought… 😀

  4. Oh, the possibilities! I approve of the name you’ve given the “Shave Ken” doll. Steve works well. Letting Sarah go is also a great touch. The rest is intriguing for a first chapter as always! Can’t wait for more!

  5. Yes liked it very much, no question marks necessary. The fixer upper bit pertained to Eric and Sookie’s emotional states not the story or the writing itself in case that wasn’t clear… I shall happily wait for my guaranteed HEA. You should get yourself some of those nice golden stickers that say ‘100% Satisfaction Guaranteed’ because that’s what your endings always feel like to me… and you know those stickers would look great plastered all over Godric, Eric and Andre 😉

  6. msbuffy: Thank you!! I guess I’m like any writer – the lure of a new story, with its infinite possibilities, is inescapable… 😀 I intend for this to be a short fic…we’ll see… 😀 Glad you liked it!

  7. hisviks: Lol! *orders 3 teeeeny tiiiiiny stickers – one each for Godric, Eric, and Andre…* I’d order huge stickers since that’s what’d be needed to cover their bits, but since I don’t exactly want their bits covered, I’m going w/ the li’l stickers… 😀 My take: Why write E/S if you’re not going to give them a smooth-ish ride and an HEA worthy of investing your time? 😀

  8. I’ll get you an extra one for Eric so he can use them as nipple covers, he likes getting bitten there so I’m sure he’ll enjoy the tiny bit of pain when you yank them off 😉 Otherwise branding their asses would work too… My take: Why write two characters with instant chemistry and then spend tons of effort trying to keep them apart. Those two are incorrigible I’ve tried keeping them away from each other but they always have ideas of their own. Why deny them a good thing… it’s like saying no to chocolate 🙂

  9. hisviks: See? EXACTLY! While I can’t say that I read for the porn (I left middle school a long while back, lol), I absolutely adore reading where E/S are getting along either in the beginning “getting to know ya” phase, or later on when they’re over some of those “getting to know ya” hurdles, and they’re relaxed enough for witty banter and sly innuendos and teasing each other, that sort of thing. I love to see them having a good, fun time with each other out of bed – that makes the porn parts actually mean something. They’re so much fun together…it just sucks ass that I can’t write ‘witty banter’ for shit, though, lmao! *orders cute stickers for each ass cheek…will be using own mouth/lips/teeth on Eric’s manly nipples*

  10. I like those stories too, although they have to be built well in terms of the tension between E/S. If it all happens too easily I get bored and there has to be something else building in the sidelines or I tune out. Sex needs to be a crescendo not an OMG you’re so good looking let’s do it all the time thing, I have termed these the ‘let’s fall madly into bed with you’ stories… I get that ‘lemons’ are a part of the fandom and to a certain extent of fanfiction but they shouldn’t feel obligatory or forced. This is beginning to sound a bit like a ‘I read Playboy for the articles’ defence but I do actually read fanfiction mostly for the other stuff. I’ve been amazed at the quality of authors and their imaginations that are out there, it’s just a shame that there seems to be an unspoken written formula that demands for a sex scene every other chapter or that a story without one isn’t any good.

I’ll cancel the order on the nip covers then. Too bad, I was going to get you ones with tassels and everything…

    Like

  11. hisviks: Hey, no, I get it – I am absolutely over the gratuitous sex just for sex’s sake crap. The minute a sex scene seems forced or just penned to shut up the horny readers, I exit the story. Now, hot sex when it fits in WELL with *and* advances the plot? Hell yeah – bring it!!

Don’t cancel the order – your Eric can use them alllll you, I mean, he wants!

  12. I read this a second time while listening to the song. It definitely brought an even deeper feeling of despair to the surface. With Eric I kept thinking he is probably wondering why he even bothered with saving himself from burning in the sun, or curing the Hep-V if this is what the rest of his life was going to be like. And Sookie. sookiesookiesookie She has her normal life, with her normal husband (we think) and her normal friends and family. And she is obviously completely miserable. When will she learn? Normal is not always happy. How many times will she make all the wrong choices for what she thought were the right reasons, only to live with buckets full of regret, what ifs and what might have beens? Can’t wait to see how you bring these two back together. I admire all of the awesome writers who are taking on the monumental task of un-fucking the disaster that TB became. Looking forward to the HEA!!! 😀

  13. Awesome, can’t wait for more, I definately got the feeling that Eric was not happy at the end and it’s always funny how a persons can feel alone while being surrounded by friends and family. Great as always.

  14. missingjasamalways: Thank you – and you’re exactly right. Both reverted to what they’d been told was ‘right’ for them – Sookie being the babymaker/server and Eric being the businessman vampire…annnnd it’s not working for them. Glad you liked it! 😀

  15. nicoleraslich: 😀 Thank you!! I’m glad it came through that even though she’s surrounded by the family and friends she was supposed to all-but worship, and even though he was surrounded by adoring fans, both are very much alone without the other. Glad you liked it!

  18. Both are hypocrites: Eric and Sookie. They want another life, but those around them, want nothing of this. Eric to please Pam, Sookie, to please the people of Bon Temps. Both have always done that. Well expressed by you, Meridian. I despise hypocrites: they have no life.
    Only they have existence.

  19. cari1973: Thank you, and EXACTLY!! They’ve both lived the lives that others thought they should live, and have tried to meet other people’s expectations, and they’re miserable now because they didn’t stay true to themselves. The price they’re paying for living what other people thoughts should be their “heaven” is high, but…it won’t last for much longer… 😀

  23. Lovely, and angst-filled. I will ALWAYS associate that song with Eric and Sookie. I always picture the meadow when I hear it — a visually stunning way they created that scene. Poor Eric….Poor Sookie……can’t wait to see you right such a terrible wrong….

  24. ashmo2000: Thank you! No matter how much they wanted to return to the way it had been, and no matter how much they caved to peer pressure from their “loving” friends/family, they were each too changed by the other for it to work. 😀 <–not an evil smile. Much.

  27. *sniffle* Just the right amount of angst. Not too much, not too little considering that we just know they’re missing each other…and probably wondering what went wrong…and how to fix it. But then again, you’ll fix it for them, won’t you? 🙂

Money and power aren’t everything are they Mr. Eric. ‘Oasis of solitude’ is it THE lawn chair? cause if so I have images and ideas in my head. Ugh Pam…not sure if I like her…spoiled princess. Pam wanting to get back to her original line of work in pimping women has she learned nothing by Eric’s side? Sitting in his chair staring at the Moon … was it a full moon what just asking I like visuals? LMAO I just want to hug him and say it’s going to be okay Ms. Karen will fix it all *and darn quickly I hope* Goodness I love that line “It wasn’t his chosen company, but as it was, it was the only company he could choose.” Heartbreaking! Time jump or just place jump. Place jump..okay so what is Sookie up to. 9 months pregnant ugh…I remember those days. Isn’t there a song *dashed off to google dang there are a lot of Moon songs this is giving me a feel for Imelda May’s Meet you at the Moon song* Well happy for a healthy baby. Feel like you are being used again are ya Sookie? Surrounded by family and friends but alone I think cause of your own choices! Pregnancy tears…I use to cry at commercials. *snicker* I love that start and I am happy for myself that there is 15 chapters already written! I have great faith in you that you will fix the book and tv’s fuckery of our favorite Vikings life. I look forward to the ride.

  37. So I caught up on the updates WordPress never gave me and now I need to find me a new Meridian fic to read so I thought hey this one. Ah that Moon song – such a shame it got ruined by Beehl staring sadly out whilst E and S were off fucking in the woods. Boo hoo poor little Beehl. I feel sorry for the artist who sang the song. Always having it associated with Beehl’s puckery cat’s ass face staring off into the distance. That’s gotta suck!

  38. ladytarara: Ha! I have to say, though, that I do love a good, angst-free, low-drama story. I know, I know…then what the hell am I doing messing around in fanfic, right? Well, there are several reasons I don’t really read it much anymore and the pervasive addiction to angst/over-drama is just one of them. But…as for my own stories here and otherwise, I do provide some drama – really, I do, and you can see it in Moon as you read along… – but it has to be realistic to ME, and “realistic” means that angst and drama don’t go on for chapters upon chapters upon chapters upon…sigh…or that the good guys are tortured over and over and over, etc. There’s “interest for the story” and then there’s…yeah.

  39. I sometimes think FF is prone to over-done drama because of the way it’s often posted. I think there’s a lot of temptation to end each chapter with a cliffie to create a feeding frenzy of likes and comments each week. I don’t always stick to this myself cos sometimes I get a bit too carried away with something I’m writing, but I really think there’s a lot to be said for writing the whole fic and posting it after reading it as a whole rather than bit by bit. That’s my theory anyway. I’ve also noticed that some fics get ‘written into a corner’ where Sookie is so shitty about something or other Eric’s done and both are so indignant and absolute with the other there can be no compromise. Lots of these fics tend to be unfinished cos there’s just nowhere to go. And muses stop ‘inspiring /’talking’ cos really the fics just need a damn good edit and a couple of rewrites. Ah the lost art of editing. How many times I’ve had to tell students that just cos you wrote it doesn’t mean it’s good!! Oops falling into a rant. I’ll stop now.

    Like

  40. ladytarara: True – the serial updating format on FF does breed a “need” for cliffies simply because cliffies really DO bring in the comments, and those comments are a lot of fun to read and they encourage the writer to engage with the reader and vice-versa.

The fics where the writer writes themselves into a corner where either Sookie or Eric – or sometimes both of them – is/are so awful that there truly is no realistic way out for them…they’re sad, but they’re also some of the most honest representations of a relationship I’ve seen. Sometimes Eric really IS just too much of a brain-fucked jerk to bother with anymore, and sometimes Sookie really IS just too much of a dumb-ass to bother with anymore.

As far as incomplete works are concerned, I feel bad for both the reader and the writer. But…I learned a lot while back (when I was still in a reading phase) to check to see if something is finished BEFORE investing my time/emotional security, lmao!

    Liked by 1 person

  41. Oh always a good idea to check. There are a few incomplete fics I chose to read anyway cos they were good / well written but these are the exception and usually whoever wrote it had too much shit going in in RL to continue, which I completely understand. I’m not talking about those fics! And yes, Eric is sometimes written as such a jerk there really is no way they can progress or go anywhere so maybe it’s best they call it quits!
Yep cliffies are fun but the flip side of that is the excess of drama!

    Like

  42. ladytarara: I guess it just boils down to what kind of mood the reader and the writer are in at that specific moment in time. Me? I’m not a fan of overly dramatic drama chapter after chapter after chapter after…ugh. To me, that gets real old real damn fast.

FWIW, I can absolutely see where some writers get their EvilEric idea from – after all, he’s NOT a 1,000+ year old vamp because he’s all nice an’ shit, ya know? But they choose to take the negatives too far just as others choose to take the positives so far that they make Eric into a sex-crazed wimp.

    Liked by 1 person

  43. Oh I can’t stand ‘castrated Eric’ and that is essentially my view of TB ‘s Amnesia Eric but also those wimpy FF Erics! He has to have fangs!!! And balls!

    Like

  44. lt: Yeah, AmnesiaEric kind of got on my nerves. I can see being lost and all that – sure, his memory is nada – but cowering? “Fraidy-cat”?? Um, no. I can see him going on the offensive hella ways before being scared like that.

And the fics where Eric all-but cries on Sookie’s boobs every night? Yeah, no. I can see being sweet – even super cavity-making sweet – to Sookie IN PRIVATE…I can see being super-respeectful of Sookie – around his truly trusted inner group, and I can see him requiring “all those who owe fealty” to him him to show respect to Sookie, but I cannot see him smooching all over her all the time in front of the “vassals” whose fear and respect he needs to stay in power. Eric is not a Sookie-juice mop…

    Liked by 1 person

  45. Mwahahaha – Sookie juice mop sound rather gross! But yes, I am not a fan of a soft, squidgy Eric. He’s gotta have some balls not to mention the GP (oops I did mention it didn’t I!) and a pair of pointy fangs that are there for more than just decoration.
If I wanted a sooky, soppy angst ridden emo vampire I’d go read Twilight. *shudder*

    Like

  46. ladytarara: I want Eric’s tenderness and consideration toward Sookie to be simply shocking to “the average vampire”. I can see Pam rolling her eyes about it and keeping a bit of a stronger eye on him to make sure that he’s as survival-minded as he’s always been, but other than that, only those he works the closest with in his “retinue” (such a silly word, lol) should see ANY evidence of that softening of his heart. *throws the Twilight “saga” at you, I mean, “to” you*
