Pondering Our TB/SVM Fandom ♥

Since True Blood ended/died in a bloody massacre, there have been thoughts, fears, and vague mutterings that our beloved fandom is dying (quickly, slowly, or otherwise).

I don’t see it that way.

To me, let’s just say that our fandom has become more… streamlined.  We started out as “a group of everyone” including the rabid, the flighty, the vaguely interested, the temporary, and the totally dedicated…and everyone in between.  Now, thanks to life and its sometimes-great, sometimes-cruel hand, we’ve evolved – we’re now distilled into a harder, stronger core group of readers, writers, and “both”.  At least, I like to think so.

There are TB/SVM readers left and there are TB/SVM writers left, and the floor is always open to new readers and writers wanting to explore all-things-Eric-Sookie-Godric/etc.  Some readers only have a few minutes or hours a week to read, and some writers may only have a few stories to tell while others have many, but all are still welcome in our rather resilient fandom.

As for me, I’m not stopping, not yet.  I have stories to finish, and there are still some plots buzzing around in my woozy head that may demand to be told.  Thanks to a nasty medical emergency it might be a while until I can get things calmed down enough to actually write the words down on virtual paper, but they’re still in there somewhere.

Sadly, some of our writers didn’t want to leave yet life took them from us too soon and we’ll forever mourn their loss.  For hopefully better and never worse, quite a few of our writers have been swallowed up by their daily lives and left the fandom for innumerable reasons, and while we hope they’ll find their way back to us someday, we wish them well.

And then…there are the writers who have sharpened their teeth in our world and  gathered their courage to move on to other projects – our lovely Gyllene (click over and give her some love!) is the latest to venture forth on her own fantastic journey.

I want to wish her well on her future publishing venture and remind her that the door to our TB/SVM fandom is always open.  Her fanfiction talent will be sorely missed (and maybe she’ll bring coffee if/when she does return!) but I do hope to read her published works far sooner than later.  With her, I don’t sense that this is “goodbye”; it feels more like a “see ya soon…hey wait, Eric did what?!?”

Again, our fandom isn’t <insert negative or melancholy thought here> – we’re simply streamlining – distilling down to our core, dedicated group of lovely readers, writers, and “both”.  And that proverbial door is always open!

More later,

~Mer

  1. You made me cry! Thank you so much! I know we’ve talked about the story that I’m going to write and if I never write it I’ll forever have that regret. Maybe when my muse runs away on that story, Eric and Sookie will be whispering in my ear for their stories to continue. Thank you again and hopefully, I’ll stop crying soon. Much love to you and all your support. I love you lots like jelly tots!

  2. Well said , I like to think that our fandom here has some seriously talented writers ( of course yourself is absolutely included ) Its of no surprise to me that many of my fav writers have gone on to forge their own stories that may have there own fandom soon . Fingers crossed and best of wishes to success in their ventures .
I love that that there are still works in progress stories brewing that just have to be told . As long as there are writers here I will be here ready for the updates . I mean come on we are talking Eric here , this man/Viking should always be in our lives not to mention a whole heap of other characters and supporting cast not to mention a few original characters ( yeh Sevrin you hear me ) .
Sending some fresh brewed to you and raising a cup to those who left to soon .

  3. I think as long as there are stories to tell there will be writers to tell them. I haven’t gotten tired of them. There are too many excellent stories l want to read more of. (Hint)

  4. I have always thought that when time passes, a fandon becomes selective.
At the beginning, anyone writes anything as if he were doing it in his own diary, but later, people specialize and become more conscientious in their writing.
The same is true of those who read in a concrete fandon. At first you read anything that has to do with what you liked, but over time, you select readings because you are looking for concrete things or concrete arguments or anything else that you liked.

  5. Thank you for the insight, I must agree with you. I find I am rereading stories I have loved rather than reading pieces I am unfamiliar with, I must try and read some newer stuff! The amount of unfinished work is a massive frustration to me, I hope some of those stories get finished for everyone’s sake. Like many others, I just can’t keep away from this fandom and I sincerely wish to see it remain active and healthy. Thank you for the reading pleasure and would default escapism.

  6. It’s probably redundant, but I agree with everything you said..I looked at my fanfiction profile and I have over 500 stories listed as favorites..so obviously a huge fan of this genre. I look for new stories and writers and try to give as much encouragement as possible using the review process. Can’t imagine how intimidating it must be to post for the first time.
I find myself re-reading favorites as well. There is a wealth of talent and creativity at our disposal, we are very fortunate.
And I am very excited for Gyllene, looking forward to reading her book when it comes out.

  7. I will always be here reading and reviewing. I love the SVM fandom and Eric. And spiders.
How many years later and there are still new stories being written. I love it.
Hope your feeling better everyday !

  8. I love re-reading stories as well as finding new stories in the fandom. Not a fan of billy boy, love some Godric and Thalia added to the Eric Sookie stories. Keep writing and I Weill keep reading. And those writers going through there own R/L issues weather it be family, work, muse or health issues just know when you start writing again I will be here, happy to re-read the story to catch up and understand the new chapter, when ever you get to posting them.

I’m layed up with an injured Right leg so i’v been house bound for three months and facing possible surgery and then more PT and reading these stories and playing games on pogo.com is whathas been keeping me from going stir crazy. Thank you all you wonderful writers”

  9. I hope you are right because I just got up the nerve to publish an Eric/Sookie story this year! I don’t know how to work wordpress so it’s over on fanfiction. Maybe someday (or with the help of someone) I’ll create a wordpress site. But for now, I’m having a ball telling their story my way.

  10. Here here! Best of luck to Gyllene, and congratulations to JustWanderingNeverLost, who is publishing her first fanfic turned novel next Tuesday! And all my love to the amazingly talented writers we have in this lil fandom. I’ve always thought this was such a great tool to exploring a dormant talent without limits. If you feel you have no other outlet or means to find your voice in a busy, miserable, overburdened world, unburden and shine!

  11. I agree with vondax55 . I find myself rereading old stories more and more. Unfinished stories frustrate me, and I usually wait until a story is finished before I read it. There is only one other fandom that I read in, and I’m doing the same there. I’ve only written for TB/SVM, and it’s been years. My muse has not only gone on vacation, but moved away. I’m retired, so I suppose she is too. I hope she’s on a beach somewhere, with cool ocean breezes, enjoying a Pina Colada. And dear lord, I hope she has her youth back and is enjoying some hot men too.

  13. If you write it, darlin’, I will read it. It’s as simple as that. You, and the other lovely writers I have the privilege of reading, feed something elemental within me and I am and will be forever grateful. I hope you are feeling better and have pots and pots of coffee nearby. And look above! A new writer! 🙂

  14. Well said. We have become a more tight knit group, and I am always reading and rereading anything Eric, et al. I miss those writers that have moved on, and especially Ericizmine. Her work has become my canon, as well as my go-to for a cheer up. You guys have all helped me through depression and tough times and I think that I would be quite lost if I hadn’t found this wonderful family.
Thank you so much for sharing your amazing talent with us all.
    Blessings

  15. Firstly, so proud of Gyllene venturing into the real world. Can’t wait to read what her imagination comes up with.

Secondly, totally agree with you. We’re still here, writing (when writer’s block allows), reading and enjoying it all. One big group who enjoys the stories that are posted and discussed.

  16. First of all congrats to Gyllene….
I always be here reading and reviewing as long there are stories to read! ( I am still discovering stories written in 2009/10 when the fandom was in all its glory! )
Thanks for every single story you have given us Meridiean 😘
    Take care.

  17. I agree. I was a late arriver when it comes to fan fiction for both the books and the show. I actually didnt start readig until the last season of True Blood. I had 2 surgeries last year and was able to read alot of them then. I totally agree that now we are reading the best of the best so to speak. Ive read many almost all i would guess of the fan fics and follow several blogs. It is difficult to find a story i havnt read The authors that continue to write are of a much higher quality and i find myself waiting patiently and happy when my phone chirps of a new update. Keep writing. I really enjoy them. I have some ideas myself as well but would have difficulty with writing parts of the story. My sister in law and i may venture into writing as well.

Thanks again for sharing your talents with us.

  18. You’ve summed up just how I feel about our fandom! I’m so proud of the authors that are trying the “real” world of writing fiction and love to know that I got to read their work first in here in this fandom. I’m a dedicated streamline reader and will forever be. Even if everyone stops writing and I need to begin reading everything over again to get my Eric fix! 😋

  19. Oh congrats to Gyllene, I didn’t know. And I didn’t know about your current roadblocks to writing, but that explains why I haven’t gotten any recent update notifications from you (cough* One Night *cough).

The only fiction I read is SVM / TB FanFiction. Everything else I read is nonfiction. I’m an absolute junkie. In fact I just reread Dodge and Chase yesterday. So good. Any more collabs?

I wonder if the fan base seems to be shrinking because so many writers have their own sites and don’t post to FanFiction anymore. CaliforniaKat still posts on both so I read hers on FanFiction specifically so I can add to her review numbers. New fans usually go to the FanFiction site (that’s where I started reading all those years ago). The more reviews a story has, the more new readers are interested. And the author Bio page doesn’t let you post the link to your outside web page, so you have to get creative in how you post it. Newbies might not be as adept at searching for missing authors as we are. So I guess I’m wondering if our fanbase really is shrinking or if they can’t find you wonderful writers anymore. Of course, we HAVE the best readers, reviewers and writers of any Fandom anywhere. Don’t lose hope!

  20. gyllene: ❤ ❤ ❤ I'm still sad that ATM is over! But it was a great ending to a great story. I'm positive, however, that in the midst of writing, Eric or Sookie one will clear their throat dramatically and BAM! – E/S plot! will happen! (And I'll totally admit that I'm looking forward to that as much as I am to your upcoming book!) You're an excellent writer and I have no doubt that you'll be successful!!

  21. cari1973: I see exactly what you mean. When I first started reading fanfiction, I clicked on pretty much every story at first – I might not have read every bit of every story, but I had to click around a bit to learn what the summaries actually mean and to find “genres” and writers who most appealed to me. Now I know what I like. As a writer, I’ve made some great friendships (some temp, some not) in our fandom and it’s been a great experience for me. ❤

  22. vondax55: I admit it – I’m a terrible reader in that I don’t like to start in-progress stories and will wait until they’re complete (which absolutely defeats the “support the writer” aspect of it all) because too many fics have remained eternally unfinished (and I’m super-impatient for that next chapter). And then there’s the fact that new-to-me writers are, well…new to me – I don’t know if they’re a good writer or where they like going with their stories, if they’re into aspects that I don’t like, etc., and my time is normally far too limited to waste on that risk. (I also don’t generally read in this fandom when I’m writing since I worry that a plot arc or bit of story will get stuck in my subconscious and I’ll end up plagiarizing without meaning to). But: this fandom is a great escape for me and I’m thrilled that I get to help others escape a bit, too! 😀

  25. tleel: Thank you!!! And I totally feel ya when it comes to basically being housebound. I am except for daily visits to the hospital (outpatient IVs every day), doctor visits, et al. It gets real damn old real damn fast. What sucks is that my head isn’t in the right place to freakin’ write, either, which makes it all even worse! *bangs aforementioned head on desk repeatedly* Hope you’re well soon!

  26. jewelpearl: Hey go you!!! There are a blue billion WP tutorials floating around, but your best bet is to just dive in and hope for the best (you honestly can’t skrew up so badly that it can’t be undone, for the most part). But so long as you’re getting the chapters up SOMEWHERE that they can be found, that’s what counts. Keep it up!!

  27. estrella75: That’s one of the things that drew me into this (or any, honestly) fandom: “here” people have a safe, generally welcoming place to see if they even like crafting stories out of words, and if they do, then they can explore whether they have some sort of talent with it. After that, the sky is the limit. (Plus we get to meet amazing people along the way!) Give my best to JustWanderingNeverLost!!

Same here – I didn't find out about either the fandom or the books until a friend of my introduced me to the show during, I think, maybe the 2nd? possibly 3rd? season…but after that, it was on!

When it comes to writing and finding parts difficult to write, I say go AU ASAP so that you DON'T have to write this or that part. Make it a story that YOU would want to read. I'm absolutely guessing here, but if you find you have problems writing sex or torture, then…don't write sex or torture – neither one is necessary to any story (unless the story is primarily about either). If the problem is in remembering details (from either book or show source), either research it (easily done with good online resources), or just…yeah, AU the hell out of it – fast! *innocent face* Best of luck if you do decide to venture into the wonderful world of fanfic!!

  32. suzymeinen: Thanks! I’m the same way – I’ve made a point to try to save as many of my favorite stories as I can so that if something happens to whatever site they’re on, I’ll still have them for later re-re-re-re…reads, lol. We’re smaller as a fandom now, but we’re mighty! Eric would expect no less of us… 😉

  34. georgiasuzy: Yep – check my post before this one for the semi/not-at-all gory details… I’ll be writing again, just dunno when yet (more surgery coming on Tuesday because the Universe is peculiar like that).

I doubt I’ll be up for more collaborations – limited time and energy, ya know? But I’m glad we created D&C, though – that was fun! Very glad you liked it!

There used to be several WP-type sites that helped give the non-fanfic.com crowd a place to find writers who’ve left that site? But yeah, that does make ya wonder. Used to if you wanted to find fanfic writers you knew to go there and BAM – tons of stories!!! But since people have started fleeing from there, we’re basically adrift in a sea of “huh, maybe they’re on WP now?” I’ve left enough stuff up to have my bio there state where else I can be found, but that site’s fear of external links makes it a bit harder. Maybe the TB/SVM fandom sites will get their collective acts together again and become popular in searches for fanfics. We can hope!

  35. Hi, I’m a relatively newbie to the SVM/TB family and I often worry that I won’t find so many of the stories/writers that have been so heartily recommended through the years. So I rush to read and enjoy that which has been so generously shared with us readers. I guess, in a small way, I am proof that the fandom is not dead, but still growing. Thank you Meridian!

  36. Love to hear that our fandom is alive and thriving! I hope you finds lots to read – old, older, and new – that you love. There are lots of stories on fanfic dot com, of course, but there’s gold in TB/SVM tags (or click Sookie Stackhouse or Eric Northman tags, etc.) on WordPress and other sites, too (check out https://archiveofourown.org and https://www.starslibrary.net/ – I’m on both although everything I have is already “here”), plus https://ericizmine.com/, and check your favorite writer’s favorite story section on fanfiction…there are LOTS of ways to find new stories to read and writers to love!). Good luck!
